Glory to God Debut
First Presbyterian Church, 324 Madison, will dedicate its newly published Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God. Sunday, Nov. 3, at 9:30 a.m.
Much intensive planning goes into the preparation of a hymnal that is intended to be used for the next twenty to thirty years. This is a particular challenge in a time of changing tastes in church music and a shift from printed material to digital sources.
Dr. Natasia Sexton, First Presbyterian’s Music Director, alongside with Organist Jimmy Kay Sanders have guided the Chancel Choir and church family during this time of creative change in worship. Pastor, Rev. Angela Dionne Madden, who arrived in Jefferson City in August, previously led a church in Southern Kansas that was one of the first in the country to try the new hymnal in 2013. At that time, she was excited to preview the new hymnal, finding it more significant than any of those previously published by the denomination. Rev. Madden ‘is especially pleased with new sections titled ‘Justice and Reconciliation’ and ‘Lament and Longing for Healing’—topics not previously emphasized.
Dr. Natasia Sexton, director of music, has chosen one of the hymns for the choir to sing as an anthem at the Sunday, Nov. 3, service.
The public is warmly invited to join the congregation’s festive Sunday morning worship at 9:30 a.m. communion service with hymnal dedication and cookie reception following.
