Job description

Making a Difference through Youth Group:

Overall coordination of Mid-High (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12) weekly programs and activities

Making a Difference with Youth Development:

In conjunction with the Christian Education (CE) and Youth Committees, Session, and a talented team of professionals, the Youth Director will cultivate a youth program from the ground up. This will include recruitment from schools, homes, community and advertising

Making a Difference with Youth in Mission:

Host older Youth (grades 4 and 5) twice yearly to grow young disciples. Lead Mid-High and High School students in local monthly mission service projects. Coordinate and lead one mission trip each for Mid-High and High School students.

Making a Difference with Education for Vibrant Discipleship Development:

Direct Sunday morning learning for all ages (Prek-12). Recruit teachers for all classes (PreK-12). Ensure all classes have curriculum. Lead children to classes on Sunday mornings. Communicate with households about all youth activities. Offer children’s messages or set up a schedule for others to offer children’s messages during morning service. Organize and run Vacation Bible School for one week in June. Maintain the Kids in Worship busy bags. Teaching duties for Sunday School classes as needed.

Youth Director duties and anticipated ways for you to share your talents:

Building relationships with youth in the congregation from birth to age 25. Plan and lead Youth (birth to grade 5), Mid-High and High School activities; foster and build relationships with youth in the community; establish relationships with parents; continue to update a master list of youth contact information with continual updates for visitors; ensure that all visiting Youth, Mid-Highs and High School students and parents receive church communications. Prepare short monthly article in the newsletter highlighting students of all ages and encouraging the congregation to support students in all their activities. Meet students outside of the church for recreation, exercise and team building. Van transportation is a ministry of connection and the YD is integral in the Youth pick-up program.

Wednesday evenings: Presently, we are not having regular weeknight youth programming. We would like to revive this programming.  Develop and implement a weekly program for students grades 6-12 at the church. Have regular fellowship events, and other ideas initiated by the YD to grow the 4th and 5th graders.

Communicate with the Faith Family, through various forms of media (Facebook, Youth FB closed group, text groups, Parents’ Group, email, direct mail, newsletter, YouTube and Instagram).

Youth Retreats and Summer Camp coordination, Winter Mid-High and High School retreats/lockins, lead a group to the Presbytery of Missouri Union Triennium Event at Purdue University in July 2022.

Attend monthly meetings of CE and Youth Committees and give guidance to team; attend weekly staff meetings (Tuesdays at 1:30 pm)

Plan and coordinate Youth Sunday annually (typically in August)

Along with the CE/Youth Committees monitor and track Youth Financial Accounts for trips/camps and other special funds.

In conjunction with the CE/Youth Committees and Session coordinate Youth Fundraisers

Create and Coordinate a Summer Church-wide week-long program for MS Youth and Youth Plus (involving intergenerational fellowship and leadership)

Regular worship participation at First Presbyterian is expected and includes sitting with students in Worship and transporting students to Worship if parents/guardians are not able to be with those students.

Other duties as assigned by the Pastor/Head of Staff (currently Rev. Angela D. Madden)

Employment terms:

This is a full-time salaried position that is based on your schedule as approved by the Head of Staff. Salary is commensurate with experience. Beginning in 2021, we anticipate offering $500 annually for Continuing Education to strengthen your talents and gifts. The Youth Director will work every Sunday morning with one Sunday off each Fall and one Sunday off each Spring.

One day of compensatory time for 2 nights of overnight attendance at a camp or retreat. 5 days of paid vacation after the first 9 months. Two weeks paid vacation after the first year pursuant to First Presbyterian Church policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred, with training/education or prior experience in education, Christian education and/or youth ministry.
  • Continuing education in Christian Education and/or Youth Ministries is also preferred.
  • Must submit to a background check.
  • Must attend Boundary Awareness Training as soon as possible.
  • Must sign a confidentiality clause
  • Must work within the tenets of the Presbyterian Church USA and Missouri Union Presbytery.
